What a CBCT scan is
CBCT is short for cone beam computed tomography. A regular dental X-ray is a flat picture. A CBCT scanner makes one pass around your head and turns a series of images into a 3D view of your teeth, roots, jawbone, nerves and sinuses.
With that view, Dr. Barnum and Dr. Rodriguez can see the shape of a root, how much bone is there and where a nerve sits before treatment starts. That means a clearer plan and fewer surprises in the chair.
When it helps
- Finding the cause of a toothache a regular X-ray doesn't explain
- Planning root canals on teeth with curved or extra roots
- Checking wisdom teeth and other teeth that sit close to a nerve before an extraction
- Looking at the jaw joints and sinuses
- Planning how to replace a missing tooth
What to expect
- You sit or stand still while we line up the scanner
- The arm turns around your head, usually in under a minute
- The images come together as a 3D model
- Your dentist walks you through what they see and what comes next
Safe and simple
A dental CBCT scan uses a low dose of radiation, far less than a medical CT scan. There are no needles, nothing to numb and nothing to swallow. We only suggest a scan when the 3D view will help your diagnosis or treatment.
We're insurance friendly and will help you use your benefits. We also offer an in-office payment plan with interest-free options, plus Cherry and CareCredit financing.

I love Sarah, she has cleaned my teeth for about 20 years and Dr. Barnum is so nice. They take good care of my husband and me.
Common questions
Do I need a CBCT scan at every visit?
No. Most checkups only need regular X-rays. We use 3D imaging for specific needs, like a hard-to-find infection or a tooth close to a nerve.
Does it hurt?
No. You just hold still while the scanner moves around you, usually for less than a minute.
How is it different from a regular X-ray?
A regular X-ray is flat. A CBCT scan shows depth, so we can see angles and measure bone and roots.
